E. Howard & Co.
In the summer of 1858 Edward Howard began producing his own watches for the manufacture of high-grade watches. Howard's watch sizes were based on Dennison system and the slightly larger 18 size watches became known as N size. The balance wheels first began with gold and steel and shortly after replaced with compensated balance wheels beginning with the series I and were also known as quick beat watch movements. Approximately 1,800 series I watches were produced, 1,200 series II. The series III movements were 3/4 plate movements and some 28,000 were produced. The first of the series III movements had their balance wheels over the center wheel with some 5,000 produced. The series III movements also included Mershon's patented center rack regulator approximately with 1000 produced, some Cole's escapements, approximately 23,000 balance under center wheels. The plates although 3/4, were either nickel or gilt and some gold flashed or Ray & nickel. The series III models were later designated by collectors as model 62's for the year 1862. Note E Howard did not case their own movements prior to the Keystone Howard endeavor that succeeded the original company in 1902.
In 1868, Edward patented a steel motor barrel to replace the original Reeds patent for series I, II, & III movements and thus collectors designated these watches as model 68's for the patent year of 1868. There were 20,000 N size series IV watches produced. In 1870 Edward used Reeds patented micrometer regulator known by most as the "whiplash" regulator. There were approximately
3,000 key winds produced with the remaining Howard's first stem wind watches.
Some 2,500 gilt movements and 500 nickel were produced for the model IV's.
E. Howard discontinued all key winds by 1878.
